Field of Work
The group of Prof. Jeltsch is leading in the biochemical study of the function of DNA methyltransferases. They have long standing expertise in the field of rational and evolutionary protein design of DNA interacting enzymes and in the design of chimeric methylation enzymes for gene regulation in eukaryotic cells. In addition, they study the specificity and activity of histone methyltransferases and methyl lysine reading domains and provided seminal discoveries in both fields.
Personal Information
Prof. Albert Jeltsch was born in Kassel in 1966. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Hannover and received his doctorate at the Institute of Biophysical Chemistry of the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover in 1994. After a postdoctoral position and an assistant professorship at the Institute for Biochemistry at the Universität Giessen, Jeltsch submitted his post-doctoral thesis in "Biochemistry" and "Biophysical Chemistry in 1999. He worked as an assistant professor at the Institute for Biochemistry until 2003. After that, he worked for three years as an associate professor of Biochemistry at the International University Bremen. From 2006 until 2011 Jeltsch was a full professor at Jacobs University Bremen. He got his professorship offer of Biochemistry at the University of Stuttgart in 2011. He has received numerous awards for his work, including Gerhard-Hess Award of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the BioFuture award of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
