Would you like to spend up to one year in the heart of Europe and in one of the most cutting-edge regions of Germany?
The University of Stuttgart welcomes exchange students from our partner universities in Europe and Türkiye!
Can you become an Erasmus+ student?
If the following criteria apply to you, then you can do an Erasmus exchange at the University of Stuttgart:
- You are enrolled at a partner university of the University of Stuttgart in the European Union, Norway, Switzerland (Swiss Mobility), or Türkiye.
- You want to study for one or two semesters at the University of Stuttgart.
- You can prove your language knowledge in German and/or English according to our language requirements (see step 2 below or our FAQs).
We can only consider your application if you are nominated by your home university first!
Application process
The application procedure for Erasmus+ students consists of five steps:
Deadlines:
April 1 (for the following winter semester), October 1 (for the following summer semester)
Please contact the International Office of your home university to complete this step before proceeding to step 2.
Deadlines:
May 1 (for the following winter semester), November 1 (for the following summer semester)
After the end of the nomination phase (step 1), we will register you to the Mobility-Online portal (our mobility administration system). You will receive a confirmation e-mail and a link to start your registration to the platform.
Once you have received this e-mail, please add the required information and upload the following documents to the registration platform:
- A passport-sized photo
- Transcript of records from your home university (either in English or in German)
- Proof of language skills, depending on the language of instruction of the courses. Please note that your language skills have to be clearly indicated according to CEFR (A1 to C2).
- You can also register for the Intensive German Course (IGC) via Mobility-Online.
If you want to attend courses only taught in German:
Your minimum German proficiency by the registration deadline |
Participation in the next higher level Intensive German Course |
C1 GER |
not offered |
B1 GER or B2 GER |
optional (if offered) |
A2 GER + B2 ENG |
mandatory |
If you want to attend courses only taught in English* or write your thesis in English:
Your minimum English + German proficiency by the registration deadline |
Participation in the Intensive German Course |
B2 ENG and no GER |
optional but highly recommended |
*English-taught Bachelor courses are rare. English-taught international MSc courses by request only, and you need to be in your 3rd or 4th year of study. Please contact your academic Erasmus+ advisor for further information.
After the application deadline, we will check your documents and give you feedback.
In the meantime, you should start preparing your Digital Learning Agreement (DLA). This is your study plan for your stay in Stuttgart: which courses you want to attend, how many ECTS you will receive for them, and which exams will be recognized at your home university.
You need to submit the DLA before the application deadline (May 1 / November 1). You must create your DLA on the platform of your home university. Only after their approval will we receive the DLA and forward it to your academic coordinator.
Please note: A PDF document sent via e-mail is not considered a Digital Learning Agreement! As of the summer semester 2023, the University of Stuttgart only accepts Digital Learning Agreement (DLA).
Incoming students, who would like to write a Bachelor's or Master's thesis at our university, are recommended to apply for a 1-year exchange (2 semesters):
- 1st semester: You will take courses and look independently for a thesis topic and a supervisor during the exchange semester.
- 2nd semester: You may write the thesis if you have found a thesis topic and a supervisor. If not, you will be able to take courses at our university instead or write the thesis at e.g. your home institution.
You will have to find a supervisor for your thesis yourself. The International Office and the academic Erasmus+ advisor are not able to assist in finding a suitable thesis topic and supervisor. You can only be enrolled as a student at the University of Stuttgart after we have received a confirmation from your thesis supervisor in Stuttgart.
Deadlines:
June 1 (for the following winter semester), December 1 (for the following summer semester)
The next step is applying for admission as a non-degree program student via our web-based application system C@MPUS.
The C@MPUS portal will be open as of the beginning of May/November.
To ensure a successful application process, we strongly recommend that you follow our C@MPUS guideline, which can be found in your download area in Mobility-Online.
Follow the instructions given and upload:
- Transcript of records
- Higher education entrance qualification (e. g. baccalauréat, high school diploma, etc.)
Please note: all documents have to be translated into English or German.
After your online application in both, Mobility-Online (including the DLA) and C@MPUS, is completed and correct by the given deadline, we can give you admission as an exchange student at the University of Stuttgart. You will receive an automatic e-mail from C@MPUS and will be able to download your letter of admission (Zulassungsbescheid) on the C@MPUS platform no later than four weeks after the deadline.
Your advisor at the University of Stuttgart will inform you about the next steps and formalities (health insurance, bank account, etc.) in due time.
From February 1 (for the following summer semester) / August 1 (for the winter semester), you can continue with the enrollment procedure via your C@MPUS applicant account. The process takes place online through the platform. If you arrive in Stuttgart after March 15 / September 15, we recommend starting the process from abroad. You will receive more information in our "Welcome Guide" and "Enrollment Guideline" by mid-February / mid-August.
Please remember that you will be asked to pay a semester contribution at the time of enrollment, which is reduced compared to (international) degree-seeking students. The bank details required to pay the fees can be found in your C@MPUS account.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to Stuttgart!
