History holds many lessons, it entertains and is an indispensable part of a well-rounded education. History explores the development of human society in time and space, winning its insights primarily through work with historical sources.
Your teaching degree program will comprehensively equip you to teach history at the high school level. This includes mastering methods and means of history studies and examination of historical circumstances of the diverse eras (Antiquity, Middle Ages, Modern Age) as well the ability to convey them effectively to pupils in different age groups. The subject didactics – meaning the knowledge of subject-related teaching methods and their application in practice – therefore plays a material role as you progress in your studies.
You should be thoroughly interested in the subject of history and equally in the methods of teaching it in the school context. Getting enjoyment out of reading source and research texts is indispensable: the study of history requires much reading!
To study history means setting out in search of Europe’s cultural roots! Handling source materials from the various eras is of key importance for this. Mastery of two modern languages, one of which must be English, is therefore mandatory. Also required are either having passed the qualifying examination in Latin, or, if not documented in your high school diploma, acquiring it in the course of your studies.
