The study program State Examination for Teachers in German GymPO I is made up of the subject areas German linguistics, German Medieval Studies, Modern German Literature (NDL) and subject-specific pedagogy. Linguistics imparts the ability to analyze concrete language material, from the sound and writing system to syntax and semantic level. Literary science offers theories and methods of analyzing and interpreting German language texts from the early Medieval period to the present. Examples are introduced in differing cultural and sociohistorical connections. Methods of teaching German are discussed and practiced in subject-specific pedagogy.
Beyond doing well in your studies, to enjoy your profession as a teacher of German you should
- Be interested in language and its structure,
- Like to read and read a great deal,
- Be prepared to analyze complex literary texts and sources and to evaluate them critically,
- Not be averse to theories and methods and to applying them to literature.
Also, be willing to explore beyond the limits of your discipline other subjects such as history, philosophy, art history, sociology, Romance studies and English.
