Another top result in THE Sustainability Ranking

In the current international “THE Impact Ranking 2024” published by the British “Times Higher Education” magazine, the University of Stuttgart has once again achieved the highest possible score in the “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” category - and is therefore ranked first in the global list together with TU Munich, RWTH Aachen University, TU Dresden, the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Delft University, the University of Edinburgh and Yonsei University. A total of 1,018 universities were assessed in this category.

The University of Stuttgart's top ranking is attributed to its outstanding performance in several areas: The number of publications in fields crucial for sustainable industry, innovation, and infrastructure; research cited in patents; the number of spin-offs; and the amount of external funding from industry.

In relation to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this result highlights that the University of Stuttgart is making a significant contribution to achieving SDG 9, namely to building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and supporting innovation.

The fact that the University of Stuttgart has topped the “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” category of THE Impact Ranking twice in a row reinforces its commitment to anchoring the principles of sustainability in its work - be it in research, teaching and technology transfer or in measures such as the establishment of a Green Office in 2021, the appointment of a sustainability officer, or in its aim to achieve a climate-neutral campus by 2030.

These efforts and activities stem from the University of Stuttgart's vision of making its knowledge instrumental for ensuring the future viability of society.

Since 2019, the British magazine "Times Higher Education" has been examining the social impact of universities in the area of sustainability in 17 categories for its "THE Impact Ranking," which is based on the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. For this annual ranking, participating universities can decide for themselves which of the 17 categories they wish to submit supporting evidence for. In addition to Sustainable Development Goal 17 "Partnership for the Goals", only the top three sustainability areas at each university are considered for the overall ranking.

More than 2,100 universities from 125 countries participated in this year's THE Impact Ranking. The University of Stuttgart participated in the ranking for the second time, competing in a total of five categories. In addition to its top ranking in the “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure” category, it achieved its best results in the sustainability goals “Reduced Inequalities” (SDG 10), “Climate Action” (SDG 13), and “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (SDG 11), showing significant improvement compared to the previous year.
