"The fact that we have received this award for our training programs for the fourth time highlights our ongoing commitment to providing top-tier professional training opportunities," says Lydia Lehmann, Deputy Head of University Communications at the University of Stuttgart, who oversees the training program. "Young professionals have the opportunity to gain comprehensive experience across various aspects of university communications while enhancing their career prospects with us. Our communications department benefits immensely from our trainees, who bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and exceptional dedication."

The PR editor traineeship is a two-year program that the University of Stuttgart has been offering since 2016. In addition to gaining a comprehensive insight into many areas of the university, each volunteer also gains work experience in all areas of university communication, such as press and public relations, website maintenance, social media, event management and the creation of print products. External training and work shadowing are also part of the traineeship.

The traineeship as an attractive career step

Jacqueline Gehrke, who completed her traineeship in August 2024, reflects on an exciting and enriching experience: “I thoroughly enjoyed the training program, including my external placements at SWR and KIT, as well as the day-to-day editorial work with the University Communications team. Right from the start, I had a lot of freedom to try things out and find out where my strengths lie. And the best thing is that I can continue to help shape science communication at the University of Stuttgart even after my traineeship.”

Verena Weber, the fifth participant in the University Communications trainee program, began her journey on September 1, 2024. "University Communications at the University of Stuttgart covers a wide range of fascinating topics," she says. Whether it's research, innovation or student life: I look forward to learning how to prepare different content on the right channels for the right target group over the next two years.”

The award for the trainee program was introduced in 2019 by the Federal Association of University Communication to enhance the appeal of traineeships in university communications and promote excellence in the field. In addition to the University of Stuttgart, eight other universities were awarded the prize this year. The foundation for this award was a survey of trainees that assessed the quality and conditions of the training program. Among other things, the assessment took into account information on the training plan, feedback culture and support, further training opportunities and remuneration.

The Federal Association of University Communication is the leading organization representing communication professionals at universities across Germany. The association includes over 1,600 communication professionals from universities, (technical) colleges, art and music schools, sports colleges, as well as dual and private universities.
