Dr. Julian Berberich and Prof. Frank Allgöwer from the Institute for Systems Theory and Automatic Control (IST), together with Dr. Johannes Köhler (ETH Zürich) and Prof. Matthias Müller (Leibniz University Hannover), both former members of the IST, have been awarded the 2022 IEEE CSS George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award.
This prize is awarded annually for the best article in the journal IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, the most prestigious international journal in the field of theoretical automatic control. This is only the second time in its almost 50-year history that the award has been presented to a German research group.
The award-winning publication is titled "Data-driven model predictive control with stability and robustness guarantees". The publication details the development of a novel method for controlling unknown systems based on measured input/output data. In contrast to existing methods and for the first time, theoretical guarantees for stability and robustness are given for the new method, even for noisy data.
This approach helped to establish a new field of research at the interface of automatic control theory and data and has received much international attention; it was the most cited article in the journal from 2021.
