DFG Funding Atlas 2024: Exceptional success in securing external funding for engineering sciences and architecture

December 4, 2024

In the latest DFG Funding Atlas, the University of Stuttgart's engineering sciences once again demonstrate exceptional performance, securing second place in a nationwide comparison. Notably, Stuttgart's research area 'Civil Engineering and Architecture' ranks first in Germany.

Strong research attracts funding - funding enables strong research. The German Research Foundation (DFG) Funding Atlas, published every three years, highlights the German universities and research fields that receive the highest levels of public funding, reflecting areas of significant research activity.

In the engineering sciences—one of the five major research areas considered by the DFG—the University of Stuttgart once again demonstrated exceptional strength in securing external funding. As in the previous edition, it ranks second nationally in DFG funding acquired during the analyzed period from 2020 to 2022. This achievement is largely attributed to outstanding performance in one of the five engineering disciplines, Civil Engineering and Architecture, where Stuttgart claims the top position among all German universities. But Stuttgart scientists are also at the forefront of Germany when it comes to acquiring DFG funding in three of a total of ten engineering research fields: computer science, systems engineering and - once again - civil engineering and architecture. In the overall assessment, encompassing all five scientific disciplines, the University of Stuttgart ranks 19th in the current Funding Atlas.

Stuttgart engineering sciences popular with researchers from abroad

The University of Stuttgart's engineering sciences are very popular with international academics conducting research in Germany with a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The university ranks third nationwide in the number of research visits.
