Double victory for the Formula Student teams at the Red Bull Ring

August 11, 2022

The Formula Student teams from the University of Stuttgart dominated against strong international competition at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. While the Rennteam was placed top of the overall ranking in the combustion class, the GreenTeam made it to the top of the podium in the electric class.

The student teams both contested a total of eight events in their respective competition classes. The students' knowledge is tested in three static disciplines (Business Plan Presentation, Engineering Design Event, and Cost & Manufacturing Event). These disciplines focus on financial planning, cost accounting, business planning, and general engineering skills, as well as those specific to the purpose-built race cars. Five dynamic disciplines put the teams' cars through their paces (SkidPad, Acceleration, Autocross, Endurance and Efficiency), focusing on handling, acceleration, driving dynamics and efficiency, amongst other things.

Great performances

The outstanding performances by both teams in all disciplines laid the foundation for their staggering overall success. The GreenTeam won all dynamic disciplines in the electric class, with impressive performances in all other disciplines resulting in an excellent final score of 950.9 from a possible 1000 in the overall ranking. This allowed the team to prevail against strong competition from all over the world.

The Rennteam was awarded a place on the podium in every discipline in the combustion class. As with the GreenTeam, winning the Endurance class - the "supreme discipline" at Formula Student events - was a particular highlight. This discipline involves covering a distance of 22 kilometers (with a change of driver) without experiencing any technical issues and as fast as possible. The Rennteam secured three further wins, three second-place finishes and one third-place finish, resulting in an impressive overall score of 951.4 from a possible 1000 points.

The next competition saw both teams competing at the Hungaroring in Hungary on August 7. The home event at Hockenheimring is scheduled for August 15 - spectator tickets are on sale for this event. The aim is to harness the motivation from all these successes and use it to bring more trophies to the workshop at the Vaihingen campus!
