The University of Stuttgart has performed very well in the current Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), especially in engineering subjects. The University of Stuttgart is among the best 150 universities in the world in this field in four subjects. Two subjects ranked 51-75, placing them among the top 75 in the world: Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. The subjects Automation & Control and Water Resources were placed in the top 150 (ranked 101-150).
In a national comparison, the University of Stuttgart achieved 1st place in Civil Engineering. The department achieved the best rating for the indicator "International academic awards" (9th place worldwide), as well as for "International collaborations" (2nd place nationally). In the subject of mechanical engineering, the University of Stuttgart also made it to first place in a nationwide comparison, together with RWTH Aachen. Here, the University of Stuttgart was able to score points in the indicators "International academic awards" (24th place worldwide), "Research quality" (4th place nationally), as well as "Research performance" (5th place nationally). The subject Water Resources received the best ranking in the national comparison for the category "research quality" (1st place nationally).
The annual subject ranking listed in the "Shanghai Ranking" evaluates the research performance of universities worldwide. The Academic Ranking of World Universities was developed at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The main evaluation criteria include publications, the number of publications in important journals such as "Nature" and "Science", the citation rates of the scientists, international collaborations in publications, and the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals - one of the highest honors in mathematics.
