Over the last two months, the two motorized university groups have been competing against international teams from other universities on racetracks across Europe. The GreenTeam was able to secure an overall victory in four of the five competitions as well as breaking several records. No other GreenTeam at the University of Stuttgart has been this successful since it was founded 13 years ago. The Rennteam can also look back on a successful Formula Student season: The students bring an outstanding 34 trophies from five international events back to the workshop on Pfaffenwaldring. The team was placed 6th overall.
GreenTeam back on top after setbacks
The highlight of the season was the competition at Hockenheimring in Germany. Both racing cars with drivers and autonomously controlled vehicles took to the track at the most prestigious event of the Formula Student season. With its e-racing car E0711-12, the GreenTeam was on course for overall victory early, achieving excellent results in the individual disciplines.
However, due to disqualifications and the resulting loss of points, the team briefly fell behind in the overall ranking. In the grand finale, a race of over 22 kilometers, the team risked everything in the hope of securing an overall victory. It became apparent early on that the GreenTeam was clearly ahead of the competition. The e-racing car was able to maintain its lead over the entire distance and initial projections after crossing the finish line drew a loud cheer from the team: The overall victory goes to Stuttgart!
"We are really proud that we as a team were able to rise to the challenge to win the challenge cup for the second year in a row," says Luis Laufenberg, Chairman of the Board for GreenTeam Uni Stuttgart e.V. Professor Wolfram Ressel, Rector at the University of Stuttgart, and Professor Hans-Christian Reuss, Chairman of the Research Institute for Automotive Engineering and Powertrain Systems Stuttgart (FKFS), among others, were also on site with their fingers crossed.
The Rennteam gets off to a dream start
At the TT Circuit in Assen, the University of Stuttgart's Rennteam got off to a dream start in the summer competition season in the combustion category. Six wins in eight individual events lead to an impressive score of 983.67 out of 1000 achievable points and first place overall. The next highlight of the season, victory at the Red Bull Ring at FS Austria, was followed by second place in the overall rankings at the Hungaroring in Hungary.
Two overall victories
A rollercoaster of emotions follows the home event at Hockenheimring as well as at the final event of the season, FS Alpe Adria in Croatia. As at the previous events, each team member put in a great performance in all disciplines. Unfortunately, disappointment followed at both events in the supreme discipline, the Endurance race. At FS Germany, the team discovered an engine failure on the penultimate evening and managed to successfully change the drivetrain overnight. However, the team missed the starting time by just a few minutes and was not allowed to send the F0711-16 onto the track. In Croatia, the oil system failed four laps before the end of the race.
The team was bitterly disappointed, but pride prevailed just a few days later. The final results after five events are impressive: 13 victories, 8 second places, 10 third places in individual disciplines and two overall victories at the Europe-wide competitions are the reward for a year of hard work in the Stuttgart workshop.
The GreenTeam and Rennteam are looking for new members
After a short break, preparations are already underway for the 2022/23 season. The new team is being put together and welcomes new members who are eager to develop the next vehicle and compete across Europe with racing teams from other universities. The goal is to build on the successes of the previous season. This year's season has shown that the competition is not over until the last discipline is finished.
