Funding for researchers at risk

As part of the 14th round of calls for applications for the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, universities and research institutions in Germany can apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to receive funding for hosting at risk researchers. Nominations are open to researchers from all countries outside the EU who are demonstrably exposed to significant and acute risk. Institutions can award fellowships to the at-risk researchers they successfully nominate for up to 24-month research stays or employ them by setting up a contract of employment for that period. An extension of up to twelve months may be granted as part of a co-funding model. It is not possible for researchers to nominate themselves.

In the 14th call for applications, applications will once again be submitted via the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's application portal. You will soon find the link to the application form on the website of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative. The selection results are expected to be available at the end of May 2024. Fellowships can be started as of July 1, 2024.

Information on the implementation of the program at the University of Stuttgart is available from the Welcome Center for International Scholars at the University of Stuttgart, which also coordinates the applications to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. If you would like to nominate a person at risk, please contact the Welcome Center by e-mail between January 22 and 26, 2024. In particular, the request for proof of vulnerability from a credible third party requires sufficient lead time. Only for Afghan and Ukrainian nominees is a self-declaration of vulnerability sufficient.

Mellon Foundation, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the Klaus Tschira Foundation, the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Stifterverband and the Stiftung Mercator.
