Generating Scientific Awareness, Interest and Enjoyment: New Program in Science Communication

October 2, 2024

Talking about one’s own research in a comprehensible manner is not always an easy task. Some researchers might even question the usefulness of doing so for non-experts. However, in an increasingly interconnected world and with ever more interdisciplinary research fields, communicating across subjects and with society at large is crucial to raising awareness of one’s research topics and results as well as generating interest and enjoyment in these scientific endeavours.

The Language Center's new English-language program in Science Communication (Sci Comm) is especially designed to assist students (both undergraduate and graduate), researchers, instructors as well as administrative and management staff with communicating and promoting their research ideas, proposals, projects and results to lay people in order to reach a wider audience and transfer ideas to society as a whole. In this multidisciplinary program, participants can join one short course or many and instruction will take place either in person or on WebEx.

Charismatic Speaking: Acoustic Voice Profiling Technology

To launch Sci Comm, Prof. Oliver Niebuhr from the University of Southern Denmark will hold an online talk on charismatic speaking. In his presentation he will outline using his Acoustic Voice Profiling Technology how voice and intonation can trigger meaning, emotions and structure and how this nonverbal communication can be harnessed in order to make one’s presentation more memorable and impactful.

Launch Event: Tuesday, October 29 from 2 to 3 pm on WebEx

Workshop for up to 20 participants: Wednesday, January 15 from 2 to 5 pm, Room 1.026 at the Language Center (Breitscheidstraße 2).

For more information about the short courses in Sci Comm and to register for them, including Prof. Niebuhr’s presentation and workshop, please view the Sci Comm page on ILIAS.
