Solemn award ceremony and handing over of Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Certificates in the pandemic framework

On July 2, 2021, the graduates of the Faculty 2 study programs were honored at the festive graduation ceremony of the Faculty 2, carried out primarily virtually. The Dean of the Faculty 2, Prof. Harald Garrecht, welcomed the graduates and their relatives with his congratulations. This was followed by a technical presentation entitled "Stuttgart 21: Die Kelchstützen des neuen Tiefbahnhofs" (The cup supports of the new underground station) by Dipl.-Ing. Rolf Becker. He is responsible at Ed. ZÜBLIN AG for the implementation of the formwork and reinforcement work for the concreting of the cup columns of the new Stuttgart main station. He impressively described the implementation difficulties resulting from the extremely complex reinforcement layout and the uniqueness of each individual column.

Subsequently Prof. Oliver Röhrle, Vice Dean of Faculty 2, presented the Bachelor's and Master's certificates to graduates of the four Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Real Estate Engineering and Management, and Transport Engineering, and the Doctoral Certificates to all successful Ph.D. candidates. Then, Ms. Klein from the University's Alumni Office briefly introduced the Alumni Network.

Awards

The graduation ceremony also includes the presentation of prizes offered by various foundations, etc., associated with the faculty, for outstanding achievements. This year the following prizes were awarded:

AQUA Study Prizes 2021

The "AQUA Foundation", established by Prof. Kobus and his wife at the University of Stuttgart, regularly awards a study prize for master's and doctoral theses in the water-related subjects of Faculty 2 at the University of Stuttgart. The prizes were presented by Vice Dean Oliver Röhrle, Ph. D.:

  • Dr.-Ing. Katharina Heck, M. Sc., Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems (IWS), Department of Hydromechanics and Modelling of Hydrosystems, for her dissertation „Modelling and analysis of multicomponent transport at the interface between free and porous-medium flow - influenced by radiation and roughness”, 1.000 €;
  • Dr.-Ing. Amin Ebrahim Bakhshipour, Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems (IWS), Department of Stochastic Simulation and Safety Research for Hydrosystems, for her dissertation „Optimizing hybrid decentralized systems for sustainable urban drainage infrastructures planning”, 1.000 €;
  • Katrin Merkler, M.Sc., Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management (ISWA), Chair of Urban Water Management and Water Recycling, for her Master's thesis: „Technologiekombination aus Pulveraktivkohle und Ultrafiltration zur Spurenstoffentnahme und Elimination von (antibiotikaresistenten) Bakterien” (Technology combination of powdered activated carbon and ultrafiltration for the removal of trace substances and elimination of (antibiotic-resistant) bacteria), 500 €.
Awards of the Dr. Artur Fischer foundation
One female candidate and two male candidates were awarded prizes by the Dr. Artur Fischer Foundation this year. The designated Vice Dean, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Hofmann, presented the prizes to:
  • Category „Marketing and innovative, forward-looking business models“: Phillip Haag, M. Sc., for his thesis „Construction Consolidation Centres für Baustellen im innerstädtischen Raum“ (Construction Consolidation Centres for construction sites in the inner city area), written at the Institute of Construction Management (IBL);
  • Category „Innovative, forward-looking and sustainable materials“: Moritz Binder, M. Sc., for his thesis „Entwicklung und Untersuchung von adaptiven, innovativen und nachhaltigen Membrankonstruktionen“ (Development and investigation of adaptive, innovative and sustainable membrane constructions.), written at the Institute for Acoustics and Building Physics (IABP);
  • Category „Innovative fastening and reinforcing methods“: Lea Buchholz, M. Sc., for her thesis „FE-Modellierung eines Holz-Beton-Verbund (HBV) Schubträgers“ (FE modeling of a wood-concrete composite (HBV) shear beam.), written at the Institute of Structural Design (KE).
Award of the Franz and Alexandra Kirchhoff foundation

Vice Dean Oliver Röhrle, Ph. D., presented this prize (€ 1,500) to Mr. Lukas Gönninger, M. Sc., for his Master's thesis "Analyse der Gesteinskörper im Inneren von Asphaltstrukturen mittels digitaler Auswertung von CT-Scans" (Analysis of rock bodies inside asphalt structures using digital analysis of CT scans.) prepared at the Institute of Road and Transport Science, Chair for Road Design and Construction. In his thesis, he investigated the use of computed tomography in determining the position and shape of aggregates inside asphalt.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the former F. Kirchhoff Straßenbau GmbH in 1975, the Dr.-Ing. e.h. Franz Kirchhoff Foundation was established, which was renamed and expanded to the "Franz and Alexandra Kirchhoff Foundation" in 1992. In accordance with the foundation's purpose, the income from the foundation's capital is used to make special final theses possible (e.g. by assuming the costs of laboratory experiments, experimental setups and equipment, etc.) and, since 1993, has also been used for cash prizes to honor special academic achievements in certain fields of study at the University of Stuttgart and other six universities.

Study prize 2020 of the Freundeskreis Stuttgarter Statik (Friends of Stuttgart Statics)

Board member Dr.-Ing. Malte von Scheven presented this prize to Ms. Dorothee Sommer, M. Sc., for her Master's thesis prepared at the Institute for Structural Mechanics: "Formoptimierung für den Bewegungsentwurf flexibler Strukturen" (Form Optimization for the Motion Design of Flexible Structures), € 2,000.

Teaching prize of the Faculty

The faculty's teaching prize of €2,000 was awarded, too. This year, it went to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Friedrich, Institute of Road and Transport Science, for his outstanding online teaching, which adapted to the needs and challenges of students in times of the pandemic. , profiled student-centered teaching. Julia Pelzer, Student Council Simulation Technology, emphasized in her nomination, "With humorous quotes at the end of each recording, a witty Christmas lecture, and his live surveys, Professor Friedrich has succeeded in establishing a personal connection with students in times of online teaching that no other professor has been able to do."

The ceremony was accompanied by the Uni-Ensemble.
