Iconic! German Design Council honors the Wangen Tower and Hybrid Flax Pavilion

October 17, 2024

As part of the “ICONIC AWARDS 2024: Innovative Architecture”, two projects from the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture” (IntCDC) were honored this year. The international competition is backed by the German Design Council, which is regarded as an authority on design in Germany.

There was a lot of competition: 540 submissions from 36 countries faced the jury's verdict at the “ICONIC AWARDS 2024: Innovative Architecture”.  The Cluster of Excellence IntCDC achieved three successes. The hybrid flax pavilion was awarded “Best of Best” in the “Innovative Materials” category. The Hybrid Flax Pavilion and the Wangen Tower also received an award in the “Innovative Architecture” category.

Wangen Tower
The Wangen Tower is the world's first accessible tower to use curved cross-laminated timber components that shape themselves as the wood shrinks.

The “ICONIC AWARDS 2024: Innovative Architecture” focus on pioneering architectural projects and sustainable solutions: Urban and landscape design that is socially and ecologically compatible, clever revitalization and conversion projects and new buildings with added value for the city and people. The internationally renowned competition places special emphasis on the holistic integration of various disciplines within the architectural context. The award ceremony with international guests from the architecture industry took place on October 8 at BMW Welt Munich.

Hybrid Flax Pavilion
The Hybrid Flax Pavilion is the first to show a wood-natural fiber hybrid construction as an alternative to conventional construction methods.

Visionary and sustainable architectural projects

The award-winning projects Hybrid Flax Pavilion and Wangen Tower show in different ways how bio-based materials and bio-inspired structures open up new paths for regenerative architecture. This summer, nearly one million visitors have already been captivated by the two visionary buildings showcased at the Landesgartenschau in Wangen. Both buildings are the result of many years of research by the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC. They were planned by interdisciplinary project teams led by Prof. Achim Menges, Head of the Institute for Computational Design and Construction and Prof. Jan Knippers, Head of the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design. In the spirit of mutual knowledge transfer between cutting-edge research and the companies executing the projects, the buildings were realized in collaboration with regional companies.

About the ICONIC AWARDS: Innovative Architecture
With the “ICONIC AWARDS 2024: Innovative Architecture”, the German Design Council has created a neutral, international competition that, for the first time, recognizes the dynamic interplay between architectural and design disciplines. Prizes are awarded for visionary urban planning and architecture, innovative products from the interior sector and building technology as well as communication concepts from all areas of architecture, the construction and real estate sector and the manufacturing industry. The focus is on the holistic interaction of various disciplines in the context of architecture. For over ten years now, the award has been highlighting significant developments in the architecture industry and attracting leading architecture firms, young designers and manufacturers to its festive annual awards ceremony.
