The University of Stuttgart has already achieved excellent results in international comparisons in recent years. This year, the University of Stuttgart has once again improved its standing. In the THE World University Ranking 2025, it is placed among the top 14 percent of all listed universities worldwide, (securing a spot in the 251–300 ranking group out of 2,092 institutions.)
Stuttgart among the top one percent in knowledge and technology transfer
The excellent ranking result is due, among other things, to the very good ratings in the indicators “Industry” and “Research Environment”.
The University of Stuttgart is now ranked among the top one percent globally in the "Industry" category, placing it 35th in an international comparison. This means that it has moved up 19 places in this category compared to the previous year. (In a national comparison, the University of Stuttgart is in 8th place out of 50.) The ranking evaluates how effectively a university supports industry through innovations, inventions, and expert consultation. It considers industry income and patents generated from the university's research outcomes as key indicators.
Excellent research environment
In the category “Research Environment”, the University of Stuttgart ranks 141st in an international comparison (and 15th compared with other universities in Germany) and is therefore among the top 6 percent worldwide in this category. The results are based on indicators such as academic reputation, research income, and productivity, measured by the number of publications per capita in high-quality academic journals.
About the THE World University Ranking
Times Higher Education (THE) has been conducting the THE World University Ranking (WUR) since 2004. It is considered one of the three most important university rankings worldwide. The ranking compares universities based on 18 indicators from five areas. The highest weightings were assigned to research quality (30 percent), the research environment (29 percent), and teaching (29.5 percent). Furthermore, indicators for knowledge and technology transfer (4 percent) and internationalization (7.5 percent) are factored into the overall score. In this year's ranking, Times Higher Education included 2,092 universities from 115 countries and regions. The analysis examined 157 million citations of scientific publications and surveyed 93,000 scientists globally.
