In the 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) by the Shanghai Ranking, the University of Stuttgart has once again achieved strong results in engineering disciplines.The University of Stuttgart ranks among the top 200 universities worldwide in engineering sciences, with strong performances across five specific subject areas. The subject "Automation & Control" is ranked 76th globally, while "Water Resources" and "Metallurgical Engineering" are in the top 150. Additionally, "Mechanical Engineering" and "Materials Science & Engineering" are both ranked in the top 200 worldwide.

In a national comparison, the University of Stuttgart achieved second place in the field of “Automation & Control”. The subject area received its highest distinction—1st place —in the "Research Impact" indicator.
The University of Stuttgart ranks third nationwide in the subject areas of "Water Resources" and "Metallurgical Engineering." In the subject area “Water Resources”, it scored particularly well in second place for the “World-Class Output” indicator. The “world-class output” indicator includes the publication of articles in specialist journals, contributions to conferences and international academic awards.
In a national comparison, the University of Stuttgart achieved fifth place in the subject area “Mechanical Engineering” and seventh place in the subject area “Materials Science & Engineering”. The highest ratings were achieved by the University of Stuttgart in two key areas: "Mechanical Engineering" ranked 4th globally for "World-Class Output," and "Materials Science & Engineering" also placed 4th for "World-Class Faculty." This indicator reflects the presence of international academic prize winners, highly cited researchers, editors of leading academic journals, and leaders of prominent international academic organizations.
About the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects
The “Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS)” of the “Shanghai Ranking”, which has been published annually since 2017, evaluates the research performance of universities worldwide in the fields of “Natural Sciences”, “Engineering”, “Life Sciences”, “Medical Sciences” and “Social Sciences”. This year, more than 1900 out of 5000 universities from 96 countries were considered for the ranking. The universities are evaluated in five categories: “World-Class Faculty”, “World-Class Output”, “High-Quality Research”, “Research Impact” and “International Collaboration”.
