University of Stuttgart among the top 200 globally

February 24, 2025

The THE Reputation Ranking assesses which universities are held in particularly high regard for their research and teaching by international academics. According to the latest edition, the University of Stuttgart is once again one of the 200 most renowned universities globally.

How do academics around the world rate their own and, above all, other universities - in relation to their own department in terms of research strength and teaching? In other words: What reputation do universities have among international researchers in these two core areas? This is the question addressed by the Reputation Ranking conducted by Times Higher Education (THE) magazine. It is considered a who's who of the world's most prestigious universities.

In the latest edition, based on the evaluation of over 55,000 votes, the University of Stuttgart has once again secured a spot in the prestigious 151–200 ranking group.

“This is an excellent result,” commented Peter Middendorf, Rector at the University of Stuttgart. “Earning a place on this prestigious list is a significant achievement and reflects the excellence of our closely integrated research and teaching. I am particularly pleased that the University of Stuttgart has once again made it into the top 200.”

Methodology of the ranking renewed

As in previous editions, participating academics could each nominate up to 15 universities they consider to be leaders in their field. Additionally, it was maintained that votes from one's own institution account for a maximum of 10% of the overall result.

New in 2025 is the inclusion of the diversity of votes as a ranking criterion, alongside the absolute number of votes. Additionally, all participants performed a pairwise comparison of five other institutions whose researchers were referenced in their own publications.

The results of the Reputation Ranking 2025 will be included in the THE World University Ranking 2026, which will be published in October, where they will form two of a total of seventeen indicators as “teaching reputation” and “research reputation”.
