How much additional money, or external funding, do universities in Germany raise from public or private sources to supplement their regular university budgets in order to expand and strengthen their research and development, early career researchers and teaching? A review of the annual figures on external funding, published by the Federal Statistical Office, provides insight into this question. According to the latest publication from September 2024, detailing the funds raised in 2022, professors at the University of Stuttgart secured an average of €833,400 per capita in external funding. In 2021, the figure was 763,600 euros.
This places the University of Stuttgart well above the national average (€326,400) and, as in previous years, ranks it third in the national comparison, behind RWTH Aachen University (€1,051,400) and TU Munich (€857,300).
