The last report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stated clearly, that carbon capture and storage (CCS) will play a critical role for decarbonization strategies in almost all mitigation pathways to achieve to the goals of the Paris Agreement and net-zero emis-sions. Carbon capture and storage technologies are vital for decarbonizing, for example, hard-to-abate industrial emissions or emissions from sectors that inherently produce CO2.
Germany and Korea have set themselves ambitious targets for achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 and 2050 respectively. Both countries count with broad strategies to achieve their net-zero goals, which also includes the further evaluation of concrete applications and the continued devel-opment of CCS technologies. With strong and innovative industrial and R&D sectors, Korea and Germany are likely to be important players in this future technology field. Nonetheless, there are still many challenges for the large-scale deployment of CCS technologies regarding public acceptance, high-costs, policy support and technical limitations. The objective of this lecture therefore is to give an overview over the current state, development, challenges and solutions for CCS technologies, with a special comparative focus on Germany and Korea.
