This lecture will be held in German.
Karl-Heinz Steinle (University of Stuttgart, Institute of History) and Fabio Proia (UNINT Rom) will be delivering the online lecture "Introducing the gender designation "diverse" in the legal language of the Federal Republic of Germany" as part of the lecture series "Gender and Diversity in Langauge, Society and in Practice", organized by the Language Center and the Gender Consulting Service at the University of Stuttgart.
The landmark ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court on October 10, 2017, paved the way for the introduction of a third gender designation in the legal language of the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 2018, people who do identify as non-binary, i.e. they neither identify as male nor female, have the option of registering their gender designation as "diverse" in the German civil registry. The aim of this lecture is to shed light on the judicial and legislative process that led to this important change in German civil status law. Following the lecture, the speakers will address the linguistic and terminological decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court and the German legislature as well as their effects on today's linguistic usage.
