He is one of China's most important chroniclers, repeatedly criticizing the systems that abuse power in his writings and giving a voice to the disenfranchised by drawing on his own experiences of imprisonment and mistreatment: Liao Yiwu, Chinese writer, musician and winner of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, will be delivering the second Stuttgarter Zukunftsrede. The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 2022, made Ukraine and Russia the center of attention across the world. The war's aftermath is creating further tensions in other countries and regions, but it is also facilitating new alliances and creating global shifts - China has taken on a major, powerful role in this respect. If you ask Liao Yiwu where he gets the strength to criticize the Chinese regime, he replies: “I don't need strength from anywhere. I just need a pen.”
Liao Yiwu was born in 1958 and grew up during the great famine of the 1960s. When he published the poem Massacre in 1989 - an examination of the suppression of the Tiananmen Square protests - he was imprisoned for four years. He first gained international attention in 2009 with his book The Corpse Walker. Real life stories: China from the Bottom Up. Liao Yiwu lives in Berlin.
7:15 p.m.
